Zinnias in a vase- still going strong into October. These crayon-colored flowers came into my life decades ago when I worked for a small newspaper. From late summer into early fall I bought them at the country store by our office, not knowing what they were even called.

I was re-introduced to them many years later by a dear gardening friend when I was planting my first real garden and I have planted them alongside our vegetables every year since.

Now when I bring them into the library no one can believe they are still blooming in October- but they are. Cheerful flowers, everyone agrees, with their bright primary palette- somehow they express summer and fall all at once and they call out to be shared.
