We had an adventuring wood duck visiting on our pond for the past two weeks. Waterfowl tend to come and go but we have never had one of these before. They are notoriously timid, usually haunt more secluded wooded waterways, and favor trees for nesting.
This drake was far from timid and seemed to have, temporarily at least, joined the flock of mallards who reside here- a rather sociable and accepting group. Three other wood ducks flew in for a day- to rescue him perhaps- but he could not be dissuaded from staying. It seems he had fallen for a female mallard who accepted his preliminary advances at least. He’s a looker.
I am a bit relieved he has been MIA for the past two days and hope he rejoined his group and set off for warmer climes. Maybe we’ll see him next spring.
