To me the solstice really should be called midsummer than the first day of summer- since we have already begun to lose daylight. I don’t mean to be negative here, just pointing out the facts. The solstice could more aptly be called the first day of school vacation. The end of May through the end of July is the best of it- especially these last few weeks of peaceful beauty.
Just this morning summer visitors- a family of 5 I have never seen here before- pulled up in their kayaks to our little sanctuary under the trees, directly in front of the window where I am sitting. They either did not see me or didn’t care if they did. “Look- ducks!” as they paddled into the flock sending them skyway. “Look- turtles!” as they careened into the driftwood sending the turtles plunging into the depths. “Look- frogs!” splash, splash…
I used to say something but I don’t anymore.
Counting my blessings here I will say that I am grateful the geese flew off this week as they had begun molting. They need a private place for the next month because they will be unable to fly. Life would have been too difficult for them here with all the summer traffic plying the waters. I hope our resident mallards are keeping their ducklings well-hidden. As it does, wildlife will withdraw from human sight.
Of course I want to share the bounty of our beautiful little pond but it saddens me to see visitors treat the pond as if it is their amusement park. It is a matter of respect for nature’s holiness while still being able to have fun.
Ah- Summer.
