It is blueberry season at the farm. I am fortunate indeed to have two jobs that bring me great happiness and that bring happiness to others. What could be better than blueberries and books? One of the books I reviewed elsewhere in this blog informed me that birds can see an ultraviolet glow to berries which attracts them. Though we cannot see that with human eyes, we can still sense an attractive, luminous quality to the full blue fruit. At the library, there is the same sense of excitement in the air- at all the possibilities for discovery.

One of the things I have been thinking about lately is the sense of continuity- in both places- that offers stability and comfort. We seem to be caught up in a swirl of time, moving us all ever forward, and picking blueberries, or choosing the right book, settles us down in the present moment. The berries are there every summer in the field, just as the books are always there in the library, though we come and we go.

And the sense of community, that is shared experience, of being among kindred spirits, has a luminosity all its own.
